The first thing I did was hit up the local goodwills and salvation army’s. They had things that my local thrift stores could only dream of. With Chicago being a huge sports city, I started buying up jerseys and selling them on eBay, Facebook, OfferUp, and LetGo. I made enough to make it a few months. I landed a remote job working for the company that I worked for before moving to Chicago. I was still only making around minimum wage. I was frustrated because I was basically putting my long term wealth on hold while living there. I found an app called Acorns that really made a huge difference for me. Acorns rounds up your purchases and invests the roundups in ETFs that you select based on risk tolerance. I only used the round up feature for the rest of the time I was in Chicago (about 6 months) and saved a few hundred dollars in the process. I started working at the beginning of 2020 and started a recurring weekly investment of $25. Something small but meaningful. At the end of 2020 with exactly 18 months of investing with Acorns, I never missed a single payment and never thought about changing the investment amount. The money being taken out of my account was just enough to make a difference in the account but not enough to make me miss the $25 a week. At the end of the year, here are my returns:
I now have over $3000 in my portfolio that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Here is the link to download an Acorns account and get started for only $5. If you go ahead and get started with automated investments, a year will fly by and you’ll be surprised by the money you can save and invest. If you invest $5, the app will give you an additional $5 which starts you off with an immediate 100% return. You can then withdraw that money at any time, but it pays off to let it grow.
